7 Minutes Dead built his name on Monstercat, one half of Orbiter, the producer who mangles bass until it sounds like it broke on purpose. SWEET OUTSIDE moves him over to mau5trap, and the harder edges he is known for come with him.
The low end here does not sit still. It growls, then it stutters, then it drops into something meaner, and the design stays filthy without turning into a pure beating. I caught myself pulling bass face at my desk, which is a stupid look and I did not care. This is a track for the front of the crowd, the spot where you feel the sub in your ribs before you hear it.
He is the same producer who teamed with Stephen Walking as Orbiter, the space-funk side project I wrote up on their debut EP. SWEET OUTSIDE is the opposite mood, heavier and colder, and it makes sense that mau5trap is the home for it.
What sticks with me is how controlled the chaos is. Nothing here is an accident, even the parts that sound like the speakers are giving out.
