The bassline is already skanking sideways when the Ragga Twins slide in over the top, patois riding a riddim bounce that will not sit still for a bar. Barely Alive built the floor and handed the mic to two of UK rave’s oldest voices. ‘We Set It’ is the result, and it is a nasty one.
The first drop is pure riddim, a triplet bass patch stabbing on the offbeat while the vocal gets chopped up and spat back out. Then it resets. Wait for the second drop, because Barely Alive sink into a heavier halftime pocket and the whole thing starts stomping instead of skipping. The low end there is filthy, a growl that clears room on the rail. I caught the head-nod tip into a full headbang about forty seconds in.
The Ragga Twins have been chatting over UK bass since the jungle days, and their delivery is what keeps this off the riddim conveyor belt. It carries the same bratty, cartoon-heavy sound design Barely Alive have been sharpening since the Domain EP, only now there is a real vocal hook driving the bounce. UKF gave it a home, about right for something this rowdy.
Riddim goes samey fast, one growl bass looped until your ears glaze. This does not, mostly because the two forces pulling at each other, old-school ragga chat and modern triplet filth, never blur into one texture. That tension is the track.
