Trance almost always reaches for a minor key. The ache is the whole point, the sad chord that makes the payoff feel earned. Benleh skips it. Keep Going sits in a major key and never pretends to be heartbroken, which is a stranger decision than it sounds.
The kick runs up around 145, quicker than the 138 most people picture when they say trance. Supersaws and hats carry close to half the energy while the low end keeps time underneath. Then the bottom falls out. The sub vanishes for a bar and leaves the synths hanging with nothing beneath them, and when the kick comes back I felt it land. That is the only moment here that withholds anything, and it is the strongest moment here.
The other refusal is the length. Two minutes and fifty-seven seconds, in a genre built on seven-minute extended mixes. Benleh has spent years making remixes and edits of pop songs, and that instinct is all over this, the habit of reaching the hook early. He barely exists in the bythewavs archive yet. Musical Freedom, Tiesto’s label, put it out in July, a fair home for trance shaped this much like a pop single.
I go back and forth on whether the brevity costs it. A longer cut could have stretched that drop-out into something cruel. What it has instead is momentum and the nerve to stay bright, which in this lane is rarer than another eight-bar breakdown.
