Four counts in and your weight is already rocking side to side before your brain signs off on it. That is what Born Dirty and RaeCola are chasing on ‘Lips Like Sugar’, a house cut that goes straight for the hips. The kick sits low and steady, the kind you feel in your chest once the volume is where it should be.
RaeCola’s vocal is the hook, the title line looped and chopped until it stops reading as words and turns into another piece of percussion. I keep catching myself humming it hours after it ends. Born Dirty keeps the low end rubbery and warm underneath, nothing cluttered, just a bassline that walks and a top end with enough air to breathe. It rolls.
Born Dirty has been in this pocket for a while. He turned up on the site once before next to Shift K3y on Misbehave, same instinct for a groove that does not need to shout to move a room. IN / ROTATION put this one out, which tracks, that label leans toward house built for a floor rather than a highlight reel.
It is a late-set record for me, the hour when the crowd has thinned to the people who actually came to dance and the DJ can trust a groove to carry itself. No fireworks, no drop you brace for. Just a track that keeps walking, sure of itself, never once asking for your attention.
