DASH – Without You

DASH - Without You

DASH works the bass house end of things, where the drop makes the whole case and the low end is built to land in your chest. “Without You” takes a different way in. Tara Carosielli sings lead, and the record carries the voice instead of burying it under the bass, a move that either works or gets swallowed whole.

Carosielli is a South London singer who came up in electronically charged pop, and she has put her topline on records with Kito, among others. Her voice sits soft and close, more confessional than belted. That is a specific thing to set against a bass house frame, and it is the part of this pairing that keeps nagging at me.

DASH is new to the site, so the DASH tag starts with this one. It reads as a late-slot record to me, the hour past 1am when a DJ wants the floor still moving but also wants to land something with a little ache in it.

Trap Nation is where it dropped. The question I am left with is whether the bass and the voice end up needing each other or just sharing a track, and on a vocal-led house record that is the whole game. Get that balance right and this is the DASH I want more of.
