Dennett has spent his run making melodic bass, the kind with a chord progression you can hum. Log On is not that.
The tempo is 140 and the low end is basically the whole record. The sub parks down around 37 Hz and holds, no wobble, no growl, one long note sitting under everything while the top end does the moving. Every eight bars or so the mix cuts out completely for a beat and slams back in. That reset is the hook. There is no melodic drop to wait for and it does not need one.
The other half of this is Scrufizzer, the West London MC who came up through grime, and he rides the thing in patois with his consonants landing dead on the kick. “Can’t do crime if you can’t do time” is the bar I have replayed most. On paper these two should not fit. I was ready to say so.
Fair warning, on laptop speakers you lose half of it and the vocal is left standing there on its own. On a rig with real subs it turns into a physical object. Dennett built his name on bass that carries a tune. Here he handed the tune to an MC and kept the weight.
