DJ PUMA – LOVESICK

DJ PUMA - LOVESICK

DJ PUMA’s artist page on NCS holds exactly one record, and LOVESICK is it. No back catalogue to measure this against, nothing telling you what to expect. So you hear it on its own terms, and on its own terms it is a vocal trance record that knows what its best moment is and saves it.

It runs at 140 and rests on a single word. The hook arrives around sixteen seconds, then the low end gets pulled out from under it and the vocal hangs there with nothing beneath: I’m lovesick, you got me lovesick. When the bass returns at forty five seconds it returns on the word itself, not a beat after. I did not expect the timing to be that exact.

The second verse is the better half. So many times they tried to change me, and every time it drives me crazy. Trance has never been embarrassed about being this plain, and I respect that a producer whose entire file here starts with this one release did not try to play it cool.

Then there is the ending. At two twenty one a filter closes over the whole mix, takes the top end away first, and leaves the last sixteen seconds muffled and far off before it goes quiet. The mix ends up lonelier than the lyric ever gets.

About Jeremy Dentelstein

Jeremy writes the longer pieces: melodic techno and house, the deep and the emotional, plus interviews and the occasional deep dive. He listens for the build before the drop and the feeling after it, and would rather sit with a track for a week than rush a verdict.
