Don Diablo – Elephant

Don Diablo - Elephant

The lead hits like a plucked steel string, thin and bright, bouncing off a bassline that keeps ducking under the kick. That is the first thing that grabs you on Elephant, the new one from Don Diablo. It gets moving before it bothers to announce itself.

The drop is where he shows his hand, and the surprise is how little he puts in it. The groove stays lean, a metallic pluck carrying most of the weight while the low end holds a tight line underneath. There is a vocal cut in there too, clipped and looped until it reads more like another drum than a voice. I kept waiting for it to crowd up and it never does, and that patience is the reason it lands.

Elephant sits in the same clean future house lane Don Diablo has been sharpening since cuts like Cutting Shapes, and years in he still sounds like he enjoys the puzzle of building a drop out of almost nothing.

Play it on the drive to work when the traffic is thick and you want something that keeps its composure. Nothing here reaches for the festival tent. It just locks in and rolls, and that is the Don Diablo I have always come back to.
