Everybody knows this melody even if they do not know they know it. Paleface and Kyla put Do You Mind out in 2007, Crazy Cousinz turned it into a UK bassline standard, and then Drake borrowed it for One Dance and the rest of the planet learned it by accident. Galantis has now taken it apart.
“Some records feel untouchable because they already captured a moment so perfectly,” Christian Karlsson said. “Do You Mind is one of those tracks. Instead of trying to completely reinvent it, I wanted to celebrate what made it so special while giving it a new life.” So he kept Kyla’s melody as the foundation and rebuilt the production underneath rather than piling a new one on top, which is the respectful way to do this and also the harder one.
I have a soft spot for Galantis handling other people’s songs, the Shape of You remix is still one I go back to, and this belongs in the same slot: the pre-game, the car with four people in it who all know the words.
Out now, and it is the first look at The Devil’s Tax Return: Volume 1, a whole EP of reworks landing October 16 on Ninja Tune’s Counter Records. More at the Galantis archive.
