State Of Mind sounds like a title you would save for the comedown, something to play while the room empties out. The record does the opposite. Jamie Jones and Camden Cox lock into a groove that wants you on your feet, and it does not spend long asking.
The bassline walks instead of pounding, that patient tech house roll where the kick and the low end trade the weight of the track back and forth. Camden Cox’s vocal gets sliced into a hook and looped until the phrase stops reading as words and turns into another piece of percussion. About two minutes in the filter opens and the whole thing leans forward, and that is the bar I keep rewinding. It is built for the 1am stretch, when the floor has thinned down to the people who actually came to dance.
Camden Cox has one of those voices producers keep circling back to, and she has landed on the site before, her vocal cut into the hook on Embody’s Dreamin’. Jamie Jones has spent years shaping this stripped, hypnotic end of house, and he keeps the arrangement lean here, no wasted bars, no drop that overstays its welcome.
There is no big trick to it. It is a groove that trusts itself. One idea, ridden until it lands, and that restraint is the reason it sticks.
