Bryan Kearney built his name on peak-time pressure, the kind of tech-trance that never lets your shoulders drop. So the surprise of Ready to Fly is hearing him let go of it. He links up with Modeā, the young Donegal producer, and the two of them reach back past all the hard stuff for something older and lighter, and I have not been able to leave it alone since.
The whole record runs on a garage-leaning skip rather than a straight kick, around 143 and bouncing, and that little swing is what gets me. It keeps the energy up without bullying you into it. Then the breakdown opens out and the lead climbs into that old-school euphoric place, hands up, eyes closed, the trance feeling I came in for years ago. It earns the lift instead of just arriving at it.
