Secondcity – I Wanna Feel

Secondcity - I Wanna Feel

Secondcity has spent more than a decade tied to one record, and it is a big one. ‘I Wanna Feel’ went to number one in the UK in 2014 and became his whole calling card, a piano-and-vocal house cut that a certain kind of club knew by heart. Paige Tomlinson just got her hands on it.

The smart call was leaving the hook alone. That ‘I wanna feel’ vocal still sits right out front, but underneath she swaps the original’s bright bounce for something lower and rounder, a bassline that rolls low instead of skipping. It rolls. the moment that grabs me is right before the hook returns, where she lets the groove breathe instead of forcing it, and when the vocal drops back in the whole thing hits heavier than the version stuck in your memory.

Paige Tomlinson is one of the UK house names who has come up fast the last couple of years, and this remix is a fair read on where her head is at. She keeps what worked and still makes the record move differently.

That is the hard part of reworking something this known. I am not sure you out-write a number-one hook, so the job becomes making a room feel it again from a new angle. This one does, right at the point in the night when everyone already knows the words.
