SEUNG & AVE – Mind On The Beat

SEUNG & AVE - Mind On The Beat

The kick is there at zero. No riser, no ambient intro, just drum machine hats and a sub that has already made up its mind. Fifteen seconds in, SEUNG and AVE yank the bottom out and leave the top end running alone for about seven seconds. Most producers save that for the middle of a record.

Taking things away is the whole personality here. Over and over the synths and the vocal chops cut for a beat while the kick and bass keep rolling, and the groove gets bigger for the hole. I like producers who trust a track to survive being interrupted. On a decent system those gaps land harder than the drops.

At 1:31 they stop the record. A couple of seconds of near silence, then a breakdown with no low end at all, and it stays gone for roughly half a minute. The build after it lives entirely up top, hats and chopped vocal climbing with nothing holding them down, a nervy way to spend the longest stretch of a record this short.

When the drop lands it comes back muffled, the highs shaved away, and the top does not open for another three or four seconds. That hesitation is the sharpest decision on the whole thing. Neither SEUNG nor AVE has turned up in this archive before, and a first appearance that spends its biggest moment holding something back tells me plenty. Then it cuts off dead at 2:44.
