Slow Magic & artermis orion – Half Alive

Slow Magic & artermis orion - Half Alive

You feel the drums in your hips before your head catches up. Slow Magic works in that mode, a rolling hand-percussion groove that pulls a slow sway out of you whether you meant to move or not. ‘Half Alive,’ his new one with artermis orion, sets that pulse down first and lets everything else lean on it.

Then the synths come up like a light turned on by hand, warm and a little worn at the edges, and artermis orion’s vocal settles over the top. It is a soft delivery, more breath than belt, and it works because Slow Magic keeps the space around it wide. The percussion never crowds the voice. When the low end finally fills in underneath, the track tips from pretty into something with real weight, and that turn is why I kept it running past the first listen.

Slow Magic is the masked producer who has spent years making electronic music that feels handmade, all live-sounding percussion and glowing synth work. Line this up next to 7PM from the archive and the family resemblance is right there, though ‘Half Alive’ leans harder on the vocal.

A lesser version of this would have piled on more drums and chased a bigger climax. This one stays in its lower register and trusts the vocal to carry the ache, and by the end the big moment turns out to be one the song never needed.

About Jeremy Dentelstein

Jeremy writes the longer pieces: melodic techno and house, the deep and the emotional, plus interviews and the occasional deep dive. He listens for the build before the drop and the feeling after it, and would rather sit with a track for a week than rush a verdict.
