Seven names on one dubstep track usually means everybody phoned in eight bars and a label stapled it together. STFU is the exception, and the longest credit list Monstercat has run on one release. Two of the seven, T-Pain and DJ DIESEL, come from outside bass music.
Here is what holds it together: T-Pain can sing. Strip it down and STFU is built on his vocal hook, not a rapper dropped over a beat, and that hook is the load-bearing wall the track leans on. When the vocal hands off, the roster behind him swings. I went in expecting a stunt. The vocal is what made me take it seriously.
DJ DIESEL is Shaquille O’Neal, and his name sets the register: spectacle, festival-sized, no apology. The one I keep coming back to is San Holo, the melodic future-bass outlier from our San Holo archive in a room built for heavy bass, next to NGHTMRE and Kompany. It is T-Pain’s first Monstercat release, on the Uncaged imprint.
This is not a headphones record. It is built for the tent, for the moment the crowd already knows the hook and yells it back. It is out now on Monstercat Uncaged, and the vocal is why a seven-way pileup lands as a song, not a novelty.
