TESS has spent two years dropping short club singles, from When You Look At Me in 2024 through Looking For A Friend last year. Shooting Stars is the one that plants both feet in speed garage, out on Spinnin’ Records since July 3rd.
Speed garage lives or dies on the bassline, and this one rolls. A skip in the drums keeps the groove a half-step off the grid, the swing that separates it from straight four-on-the-floor house. I keep coming back to how little TESS wastes. It runs about two minutes, works the low end, and clears out before the idea gets tired. This is late-slot music, for when a room has settled and needs a shove.
Speed garage has been creeping back into club sets lately, and a Spinnin’ single this bass-heavy says the sound has room past the underground it came from. For a producer still early in the run, that is a good flag to plant. You can follow the thread across everything TESS has put out so far, and this is the one that finally picks a lane.
Two minutes is not much to work with. TESS spends all of it on the groove and none on filler, and for a speed garage record that is most of the battle.
