The turn is when the vocal steps back and the guitar lead comes up through the filter. Chorus does its lifting, hands the melody off, and the low end keeps walking underneath it. That handoff is the high point of “Change For You,” and Tollef and Terry Zhong land it clean.
Tollef calls the record “some sort of blend between classic French House and euphoric dance,” which is a fair account of what he built. The filtering is softer than the 1999 version of this sound, and the chords go up where plenty of house records would go moody. I like that they committed to the bright option. There is a real melody in here and neither of them buried it.
Tollef is Norwegian and a regular on OH2 Records, so an Oliver Heldens imprint is home turf for him. Terry Zhong is the new name, a Chinese producer making his first appearance for the label after work with Morten and Ian Asher. Two very different rooms, and you cannot hear them arguing.
First pass through, I kept waiting for a bigger drop. It never arrives. The record resolves instead of detonating and that guitar just keeps going, which is why it reads better on the fifth play than on the first.
