Tujamo & BARTS – Magic

Tujamo & BARTS - Magic

An Extended Mix is supposed to be a promise of room. Eight minutes of it. A long drum intro to mix under, a second breakdown for anyone who wants the hook twice. Tujamo and Australian producer BARTS give you three minutes and sixteen seconds on ‘Magic’, and then they are gone.

Part of me wants the DJ version back, because that is what the label on the tin promises. The bigger part of me thinks most extended mixes are padding with a kick under it. Three minutes and change forces the groove to arrive early and stay honest, and Tujamo has built that way his whole run: kick and low end doing the lifting, everything above them out of the road. Density has never been his move. Space is.

BARTS is the less familiar half of the credit, an Australian working under barts_aus with no footprint in this archive yet. Tujamo needs no introduction. He has been turning up here for years, going back to ‘S.A.X.’ with Laidback Luke, and the resemblance holds: the sound itself is the hook, nothing allowed in front of it.

Future House Music put it on the channel on August 11. I have already parked it in a set list for a backyard thing in September, in the slot where the sun is gone but nobody has left yet. Knowing when to stop is a rarer skill than knowing how to start.
