The second drop is where Ego Check quits pretending. The first one softens you up, a mean halftime bounce with the growl kept on a short leash. Then WHOiSEE yanks the leash off and it gets ugly in the best way.
That switch is the whole track for me. The low end goes from a controlled wobble to a dry, cracking snarl that sits right in the chest, and the drums turn meaner under it. I caught myself pulling bass face at my desk, which is not a great look on a Tuesday. It is riddim built for the rail. Triplet bass locked tight, no melody coming to save you.
WHOiSEE has been building a name in the grimier corner of dubstep, and Ego Check landed through Monstercat. New to the name? You can find WHOiSEE on the site here, and this cut is a good door in.
What I keep coming back to is how little it wastes. No long melodic intro, no vocal to hide behind. Just enough space before that second drop to make you brace, and then it does exactly what it threatened.
