At 134 BPM you expect the bass to give up and hold one note. This one refuses. Why U So keeps the low end moving under ‘Heaven’, stepping off the root at the end of nearly every bar while the kick stays planted and never negotiates.
The kick and the bass land together on the beat instead of trading places, so there is no offbeat bounce doing the work for them. All of the swing comes from the hats sitting up on the eighths. The mix is bright too, weighted toward clap and cymbal more than sub, which at this tempo should feel thin. It does not. It feels fast.
Then it stops. Two minutes and ten seconds, no long breakdown, no second act, no reset. I checked the runtime twice because I was sure I had been handed a radio edit. It arrived through Selected at the start of July and it is the only Why U So record in our archive so far.
Records this short usually read as unfinished. This one reads as edited. Somebody sat down and worked out which bars were actually carrying the groove, then cut everything that was only there to fill the time, and that is a harder call to make than it sounds.
