One name on the credits, and with ZUEZEU that is the part worth noticing. Most of the last two years has been shared billing, an EP alongside Black V Neck and Cave Studio, a remix of Billy Gillies. WEIGHTLESS carries no feature line, and the arrangement is as single-minded as that sounds.
It sits at 128 and it is built from the bottom up. The sub does nearly all the load-bearing while the top sits thin and papery, a little hat and some top-end air, almost nothing in the middle. Then the vocal comes in and the bottom vanishes. Not a filtered fade, a cut. The first time it happened I thought the stream had dropped out. A voice hangs in an empty room longer than is comfortable, and when the sub returns it lands like someone put the floor back down. On laptop speakers half this record does not exist.
It is his second for Batty Records this summer, about six weeks behind GO, and the two solve the same problem from opposite ends. GO never stopped moving. WEIGHTLESS gets its push from what it takes away.
The radio mix runs three minutes and ten seconds, short for a track whose best move is a hole in the arrangement. I would happily sit in that gap another sixteen bars. The restraint is probably why it works, though, and stretching it would turn the trick into a bit.
