On October 30th, 2016 it was officially the 10th anniversary of Skream’s famous album when he was the face of and in the process of pioneering dubstep. If you’ve never listened to this style of dubstep please give it a chance, it tends to have a low bass but reggae theme to it which is primarily what dubstep used to be. If I had to choose a few crucial songs to listen to, they’d have to be Blue Eyez, Stagger and Rutten. Blue Eyez has that reggae sound I was mentioning earlier, while Stagger & Rutten both are more straight dubstep tracks that are wonky and make you want to dance. Don’t let those two rip you away from the rest of the beauty that is this album however.
Skream more recently has turned to Nu Disco & Tech House but there have been rumors of him playing some dubstep sets still, however that is not confirmed. Although, it is nice to see other artists from his time coming back such as Benga, Caspa, Rusko etc. I’m hoping now that they’re back, he may decide to come back for a bit or even for an album, EP, anything just to hear what he can do with dubstep now.
All in all, please take a listen to what the origins of dubstep were like. Not to leave out other pioneers like Skrillex, Nero, Flux Pavilion and others in that field, Skream just deserves a huge shoutout for everything he’s done to form what dubstep has become today. Thank you Skream. Take a listen to the album below on Spotify!
