Whenever we search Google we are contributing data that will be compiled and analyzed. This shouldn’t come as a huge surprise, they release data to us every year about things we search most and trends on the internet. Recently, Google released data on the growth of EDM and you will not believe what they’ve found.
With Youtube being one of the most popular places for internet users to find new music, Google has found that subscribers to channels relating to EDM has grown an incredible amount this past year. Subscribers have grown by 60% on smartphones, 77% growth on televisions, and a 175% growth on gaming consoles. If you haven’t been paying much attention to the Billboard Top 100, you’ll find there are nine, yes nine, EDM tracks on it. Together these nine records have garnered 2.3 BILLION views with their official Youtube versions.
What is really impressive about the growth of EDM this past year is the audience that has the most growth. From January to July of 2014, there has been an increase of 80% for listeners between the ages of 35-49. Most of our parents are now checking out our music and enjoying what they hear. We’ve seen EDM hit the mainstream radio and even television, all indicators that this music has connected with more than just the younger generation. My own mother is part of this incredible growth, she’ll be attending her first electronic concert in May!
Though it comes as no surprise, Youtube users under the age of 25 make up the largest group of listeners. Followed close behind are users between 25-35 that make up the fastest growing segment of listeners. Google has given all of this information in a handy flowchart, and even included the reasons why EDM has seen such a rapid growth.
The music we know and love is affecting more people today than ever before. Google, one of the most recognized names in the world, is taking an interest in the music and finding that it is incredibly popular and continuing to grow. 2015 should be another amazing year, let’s see what the music world brings us.
