Skrillex and Diplo are arguably two of the biggest names in EDM, but right now they have to be the biggest, full stop. They created a mass of hype for their new album after teasing that it would be released soon via Twitter a few days ago, and then fuelled the fire with a marathon 24 hour Jack Ü DJ set. 7 hours in, they announced that their album had just dropped, with everyone trying to juggle listening to their long-awaited release and the live stream of their party. Even though the live stream got shut down by police 18 hours in, their album is now out for all to listen to and appreciate after a long wait. And wasn’t it worth it.
The album starts off with an ambient drug-inspired theme in the form of “Don’t Do Drugs Just Take Some Jack Ü”, and then continues with the huge “Beats Knockin” (essentially Express Yourself Part 2) with Fly Boi Keno. “Take Ü There” is next, which you will have already heard if you have paid any attention to the EDM scene over the last few months. “Febreeze” (with 2 Chainz) follows, taking on the same frenetic style of “Beats Knockin”, which is broken with the softer “To Ü” (featuring AlunaGeorge). Diplo brings his Dancehall expertise next with the hard “Jungle Bae”, and then “Mind” calms things down a bit before the Snails collaboration, which is just as huge as everyone expected it to be. The surprise of the album is next up, with the one and only Justin Bieber on vocals in “Where Are Ü Now”. It’s quite chilled out but still carries the now well-established Jack Ü sound. The album closes with Missy Elliott’s remix of “Take Ü There”, which is similar to the original except with rapping in previously instrumental sections of the song.
On the off chance you haven’t heard the album already, do yourself a favour and do it now.
