Illenium is well-known for his melodic dubstep, but has just dropped a trap remix of Dada Life’s “Tonight We’re Kids Again”. He manages to cram all of the sounds of the genre into two and a half minutes, with the 808’s, hi-hats, bass, sirens and “OOH”’s that signify the genre all featuring repeatedly. It’s also less serious than a lot of his other work, mostly due to the sample from the original song. It’s a bit hard to tell where the song will go, but as it builds up and the drop is teased it becomes clear that it’s going to be a great drop, and it is. It somehow manages to fit into Illenium’s style and still be a typical trap drop that goes off. The bass rise a few bars into both drops is very clever and adds another element to the drop that most ravers or untrained listeners would miss, but it makes the song and along with the catchiness of the drop shows that Illenium can do trap as well as melodic and chilled dubstep. It makes you wonder how many other cards he’s got up his sleeve, and I for one am watching and listening because he keeps showing just how good he is.
