Throwback Thursday: Daft Punk – Da Funk

July 9, 2015 by Nick Grindrod

This Thursday is devoted to the first big song by one of the greatest Dance artists of all time: Daft Punk. It was hardly listened to when it was first released in 1995, but gained quite a bit of popularity with its inclusion on their debut album Homework in 1997, and is now an acid house classic. This is owing to its two defining qualities – the acidic synth and its catchy beat. The synth is now considered a staple of the acid house sound, but the beat is something else.

The bass that the duo achieved on the kick in Alive was so good that they used it again on Da Funk, and the other percussion asks for a redefiniton of the word catchy – the percussion solo around 2 minutes in forces you to move, and the breakdowns are world class. The word catchy really isn’t good enough to describe the incredibility of the sounds that Daft Punk created when they were just starting out, and Da Funk is a testament to that. Have a listen to one of their earlier tunes – not only is the song itself very good, each individual part is exceptional too.
