If you are unfamiliar with DJ AM or his impact on the electronic scene, I urge you to do a little research, press play on a couple of his tracks, and come back to this article. Growing up in Philly, many different genres of music influenced his music taste and he was not afraid to mix anything and everything into his sets or as a mashup. Not only was he the DJ rockstar, but devoted his life to helping others in recovery, having been an early victim of substance abuse.
To give us an accurate portrait of his life, AM’s mother, Andrea, gave director Kevin Kerslake unfiltered access to AM’s laptops and journals, giving us an in-depth look at the life of DJ AM and all it encompassed.
AS I AM: The Life of Time$ of DJ AM is set to feature music from the legendary producer himself, never before seen movies and stills from his extensive personal collection, and interviews with close friends and colleagues. It is our duty as music connoisseurs to ensure the integrity of this film by including the music from one of our very own, and with all of our help, the rights to license the music can be purchased and the movie made to perfection.
There are plenty of perks for those looking to contribute, and if you cannot contribute financially, sharing the news and the link to the Indiegogo project will help further the cause. Your contributions will help with the cost of producing the movie which can be broken down into three categories: 60% music licensing, 20% marketing and distribution, and 20% finishing costs. Some of the epic prizes include: pieces of his legendary sneaker collection, a Daft Punk costume designed by Daft Punk’s own tailor, t-shirts DJ AM wore, signed and unsigned art pieces, limited edition NIKE shirts, limited edition vinyl from Serato, custom slipmats, and many more.
DJ AM was a mastermind of electronic music and its capacity to energize a crowd. He instilled hope and inspiration into a whole community of people looking to recover from some of life’s toughest tests and he was someone that we could all look to as a symbol of courage.
For any DJ AM fan, this movie is a must-see, not only to hear some of his most iconic mixes, but to see his life immortalized and celebrated. Contributing to the fund will help get the movie out for all to see and to license the music that we all so dearly loved. You can check out all of the prize packs for contributions right here, but please at least share the link and get the word out. It would be an honor for us all to see a film properly celebrating one of the biggest names in electronic music that we lost far too soon.
