This year it is a very special year for Movement. It is the 10-year anniversary of the festival and I am expecting that this be the biggest and best one yet. To me, this year is much more about reflecting on the past and the history than ever before. As the years have gone on, this push towards the history and roots of techno and what the festival is truly all about has become more prevalent in the more recent lineups. With the subtraction of the OWSLA stage on Sunday, the festival is jam packed with historic techno legends and up and comers alike. Last year felt like it was more about the city of Detroit rather than the techno itself and the history it holds in this city. 2015 brought along arguably Detroit’s biggest electronic act with that being Griz, along with a very prevalent Detroit rapper Danny Brown.
This year’s lineup truly speaks to the techno heads in a fashion only Movement could present properly. Detroit heavy hitters such as Claude VonStroke Kevin Saunderson, and Carl Craig lead the way along with many other incredible historic acts such as Richie Hawtin, Dubfire, Loco Dice, and the legendary Kraftwerk as well. The after parties also totally cater to this theme, bringing back those old names like Maceo plex & Danny Tenaglia. For fans of techno, fans of Detroit, and everyone in between, I believe this 10th year anniversary has a lot to offer for all walks of life truly making for a memorable Memorial Day weekend in Detroit.
Some key things to look forward too this weekend I would first say would be the OWSLA stage on Sunday in the underground. OWSLA tweeted today that they have plenty of surprises so keep your eyes peeled for that. Looking forward to seeing Kraftwerk 3D finally. Movement never fails to surprise you with a massive headliner that no one is expecting. Dog Blood gave us that surprise in 2015. Going to be great to see all of the Dirtybird boys such as Justin Martin and J. Philp on Monday as well to close the festival out strong. One of the notable things for year’s edition of Movement that I am expecting to see is an even more diverse crowd. With the festival vastly growing in size year by year, it is going to see how much the attendees differ by year. Of course there are going to be the die-hard tech heads there as usual, but I am expecting to see a lot more people give techno a try and open their ears to new music making the look and feel of the crowd be a lot more diverse. Detroit Mayor, Mike Duggan also declared this week in Detroit as Detroit Techno Week. Be prepared to see the city of Detroit alive like it never has been before. I am very excited to see all the Detroiters and all the others movement goers shuffle their way into beautiful Hart Plaza early Saturday afternoon for the start of the 10th edition of Movement. See you guys there!
