Aphex Twin is well known for his unique synthesised style of music, often with weird names or sounds. Windowlicker is his most famous song, starting off with a smooth yet glitch beat then building up to a synthesised bass at the end of the song. That alone was enough to make it popular, yet the incredibly weird gangster hip hop parody video that accompanies it earned a nomination for best video of 2000 at the British VMA awards. Interestingly, the bass at the end of the song forms a perfect spiral when the waveform is spectrally analysed. This was done on purpose by Aphex Twin, who used a program that allowed him to insert an image and obtain a sound as a result, which he used in Windowlicker. It’s a weird song with a weird video, but its status in the experimental electronic music scene makes it a classic.
