This is hands down the track of the week. Out of nowhere, Coldplay teases a new song (and hopefully future single) from their next album, and this one pushes the band further into the dance music realm. ‘A Sky Full of Stars’ features production work by Avicii, who is no stranger to the band. Avicii remixed their lead single ‘Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall’ from their last album ‘Mylo Xyloto’. This time Avicii’s magic made the cut for the actual track, the first time Coldplay has infused EDM into their sound for a non-remix. If this makes a splash, it will be a multi-format hit (consider them good candidates for Pop/Top 40 as well as Alternative and some Rock formats) that could potentially break barriers for EDM’s current stigma and open new frontiers for exploration and interaction with new fans. We are so happy for Avicii to be getting this kind of recognition. When Coldplay, one of the biggest bands of the last decade, asks you to produce for their album, you know you’ve made it. Let’s not forget Avicii is serving as a producer for Madonna’s next album, which only solidifies the fact that he is a top dog right now.
But at the end of the day we can push all of that hype away, because the music really speaks for itself. This is a beautiful track that dances the line of classic Coldplay and contemporary Avicii in a cool way. The track is cool, it’s calming. It’s as simple as that.
