With Big Gigantic on their Brighter Future tour, I recently had the great opportunity to talk with Jeremy from the funkiest duo we all love. Being a long time fan and seeing they’re about to make their first stop in my home state of Kentucky soon, this was by far one of the most fun conversations I’ve had the pleasure of partaking in.
-How did you guys come together to form Big Gigantic?
-We met in Boulder, Colorado 10-11 years ago, through the music scene there. Dom was playing in the motet and I was doing graphic design for them. Once we met, we immediately hit it off. We soon started living together and making beats along with instrumentals to go along with them. A bit of time and shenanigans in between, here we are, Big Gigantic.
-What inspires you all to produce and make the indifferent music that you do?
-It’s an expression of what we are feeling at the time. Coming from jazz backgrounds, we played off the wall music and wanted to bring those aspects to EDM and play shows for people allowing them to dance whatever problem they may be having away.
-Which track off of brighter future was the most fun for you guys to make?
-The whole album was an entire journey, so there’s not a specific track. It was amazing to work with so many different artists and friends’ we’ve known for a while, along with new people. “All Of Me” with Logic and Rozes was fun to work with and blend the different vocals together.
-Hows life on the road? What are some positive and negatives?
-We love being on the road, it’s something we’ve been doing and loved for a while. The tour is a few stops in and its going fantastic. Fans are reacting very well to everything, we get to be experimental and watch people fully diverge themselves into the music.
-What message do you want to send to fans/music lovers alike with your music?
-Put a positive vibe out for fans while spreading love, in hope they’ll enjoy themselves and take that into other aspects of their daily lives and people around them.
-As someone who’s seen multiple Big G sets, you guys put more passion and energy into your sets than nearly anyone in the industry. Was there a specific deciding point in your guy’s life that made you realize the music path you guys took was one of “music truly for the fans?”
-For us, it’s always been about being for the fans and music. It’s never been about the money regardless of our level of success. We want to do what feels right and honest. We’ve always released our music for free, we want people to come dance the night away and have no problems. Were doing what we always have, but throw bigger parties now. It’s always been about playing together and improvising while having fun.
-Seeing as you all have already collabed with a good portion of the industry, who, if it’s not already happened, would you consider your “Dream Collab” to be with?
-Ohh man, there’s so many amazing musicians. Someone such as Stevie wonder would be amazing to work with, but there are so many people it would be cool to make tunes with. The possibilities are endless.
-As 2016 comes to an end, any big plans for 2017?
-We have the tour for the next month, but then well announce a New Years run with a few shows and another Brighter Future tour in the spring/winter. Then hopefully every summer festival we can and then, make new music. Just trying to keep the good things going.
-Any plans in the near future for Big Grizmatik?
-Oh ya, were always trying to link up with those guys. We want to do more shows and have stuff down the line were looking at already. As of now everyone’s just so busy but I’m sure next year they’ll be something for you guys.
-What advice would you give to up and comers in the industry?
-I would just say build connections with different artists/promoters is huge. Just get out there and meet as many people as possible. Before anyone knows your music, they’ll know you. Going out there and making real connections with people and knowing what they’re all about. That’s what was huge for us all around the country. People flew us across the country because we both wanted to do it for the music. There’s people who are really passionate about what they do, and that’s huge for being successful.
