Air Max ’97 – Face Up

December 5, 2016 by Alessio Anesi

I know that sometime I inexorably tend to be a little too poetic and cryptic in my write ups, but I swear that, today, this unusual quote perfectly fits in the review of this exceptional tune.
Why? Because it’s extremely aggressive. Aggressive against the rules, the canons, against our  traditional conception of ‘song’ in most of its foundations: construction, progression, rhythmics, sound design, all shattered and remolded in a new dawn.

In these six minutes Air Max has written a unique and detailed story, where intricate layers of sounds slowly (but constantly) spring up like plants, overlapping one with each other in a dense jungle where the atmosphere quickly becomes muggy, obsessive, frenetic and superbly engaging. From the ‘arrogant’ opening drum loop all the way through the endless epic climax, ‘Face Up’ give us multiple majestic views filled of details that shouldn’t be missed in order to appreciate the nature of the composition in its entirety (a good sound system/headphones are strongly suggested).
Of course it’s not easy listen, nobody says that, but personally I found it extremely capable of stimulate my critical thinking as well as my fantasy.

In short is not a simple track, it’s an experience.
