We had the awesome opportunity to sit down with the UK duo, Son of 8, and talk about their latest single, “Future Lovers of House” along with the news that they would be playing a summer residency at one of the best clubs in Ibiza, Judgement! The guys took the time to sit and talk with us about hearing the Judgement news, the debut single, and plenty more. Check out the full interview below along with the video for the single at the bottom!
First, mind introducing yourselves to our readers?
We are Son of 8, two music producers and DJs from Liverpool, UK. We produce all things House music. We also put out a weekly House Music radio show called ‘Our House’ that is syndicated around the world and can be downloaded from iTunes and Mixcloud.
How did the two of you come together to start producing music?
The short is answer is due to a mutual love of Dance music; we have been friends for 20 years and went to each other’s gigs initially. We started producing together three years ago doing a lot of the techier club stuff – despite both producing we had never actually worked together in the studio… In the last year we have been doing a lot of crossover style house which is aimed more towards the charts and radio than for the clubs, but making club music is still what it’s all about for us.
Where do you get the inspiration for your sound, who influences you?
We have an eclectic taste in music but it is always something you can dance to. We have studied music and musical theory in detail so when we hear a section in a track that we like the sound of, we get straight to the studio to try and recreate that sound. We have always been into the dance music scene generally since the early days and have enjoyed the sounds from Frankie Knuckles and Steve Silk Hurley with their Chicago style house. Eric Morillo and Carl Cox were also massive influences to us when we watched them play many times at Cream.
With the release of your debut single, tell us what the experience has been like?
The feedback from the track has been amazing and already we have lots of releases planned this year – we’re very much looking forward to them all! The next track is out at the end of May on Armada Deep and between that and Future Lovers Of House, we have now done two music videos which were great experiences to be involved in the making of them.
You’ve landed a huge residency at Judgment in Ibiza, how did you first react to the news?
We were so happy it’s not really sunk in. We both went to Ibiza for the first time in 2016 last week and got shown around the refurbished Eden. I was shocked at how good the new club layout, light and sound system are. We can’t wait to rock it. So excited not just to be in Ibiza every weekend but all summer. Also having now seen the line-ups we are really excited to work alongside the top DJs that Eden and Judgment have booked.
What are you most excited about? Nervous for?
We are most excited to be part of the Judgment family for the whole season, to rock the club and party with new friends. We don’t get nervous as we are always too busy in the studio to think of the gig until we are actually there!
Can we expect something special for those Judgment shows?
Yes, the whole production value of the show has been taken up a notch this year. It will be a UV party with free face paints plus lots of dancers, performers and crew on site to ensure the night is one you will not forget. Expect a carnival atmosphere packed into the club each week.
With 2016 almost to the halfway point, what else can we expect from you in 2016?
We are opening Eden with Mark Knight at the end of May. We play the main stages at We Are Festival and Astonbury festival, and in-between touring we are flat out in the studio with collaborations with the likes of Phats & Small and Steve Edwards to name but a few. Busy times…
Do you have any advice for up and coming DJs/producers?
Yes… Work hard, believe in yourself and never give up. It’s taken over 20 years for us to get to this point. There are no short cuts.
Any last thoughts?
We hope that your readers can get out to Ibiza and join us sometime this summer at Judgement!
