The return of the legendary duo, the Warp Brothers, is marked by the re-release of their massive hit, “Phat Bass”.WE had the opportunity to sit down and talk with the duo about returning to touring after 8 years while still keeping one foot in the scene and much more. Instead of spoiling the entire interview, I’ll let you check it out below!
A huge thanks to Ollie and Peter for taking the time to sit down with us!
1. First off, mind introducing yourselves to our readers?
– Hi I´m Peter … and I´m Ollie and together we´re the Warp Brothers. Two expats from their home countries, ha ha ha
2. How did the two of you come together all those years ago, and what sparked the revival?
– Peter is the new member of the Warp Brothers and we just started playing together last summer. We´re friends for about 16 years now and Peter was one of the first promoters who booked “us” internationally. After we have been getting quite a good amount of requests from fans all over the world for the last few years to bring back WB and our music, we just couldn’t resist. We have been working on the relaunch for a couple of years but unfortunately it had to happen without one of the original artists. So with a slight change of personnel and rework of our biggest record Phat Bass on the #1 DJs in the world’s label, Smash The House, Warp Brothers are back!!
3. Who would you say are some of your biggest influences?
– James Brown, Liasion Dangereuse, Nitzer Ebb, Front 242, Jean-Michel Jarre, Todd Terry, Africa Bambaataa, DAF and Kraftwerk we would say. Oops, and New Order of course, ha ha ha ;)))
4. Given that the industry has changed dramatically in the last 5 years, how do you think your sound will fit in to the changing scene?
– For now we can defintely say pretty good. DJs like DV & LM, AvB, David Guetta, Blasterjaxx, Afrojack, Sander Van Doorn, Nicky Romero, W&W and many many more supported our new single and we stayed a good week at the #1 postion on the Beatport Electro House Charts and peaked #5 on the Main Charts. On top, Phatt Bass 2016 has been signed pretty much worldwide to some great labels like Smash The House, Armada, Kontor Records, Scorpio Music, Suara just to name a few. So for now we can state it fits and we will work hard to have our follow-up singles fit too. We stopped Warp Brothers about 8 years ago but Ollie continued playing as D.O.N.S. and Peter under his alter ego Seal De Green. Besides this we run our 5 labels, so we stayed very much in touch and like that the changes of the scene accompanied us all along the way.
5. What are you most excited about coming back into the scene with fresh sounds?
– Definitely touring together and getting on the road again, and of course the love from people around the globe. Touring togther is just more fun and a totally different atmosphere compared to playing by yourself. One of the biggest upcoming highlights will be our appearance at the Smash The House stage at Tomorrowland Brasil in Sao Paolo. That alone is exciting enough and worth the comeback.
6. What is one of your favorite places in the world to play?
– Based on our history definitely Australia, but there are so many other great places it´s hard to really pick one. Club-wise the same. Just too many to mention only one.
7. What can we expect from Warp Brothers in 2016?
– Rock N Roll feeling on stage, for sure more releases and maybe collaborations, our weekly radio show/podcast “Here We Go Again” and a lot of online activities.
8. Any advice for up and coming djs/producers?
– Not an easy question these days. For sure do what you love and don´t imitate just for the sake of being succesful. There is only one Martin Garrix or DV & LM! So try to find your own sound, style and signature or be creative with ideas. Of course you get inspired by music you hear wether it´s brand new or older. Just work hard and take care of your shit. We both run our KKC labels plus Highlimit Records and Dos Or Die Recordings and we strongly feel that more and more DJ´s and producers don´t even believe in their own music and work. The majority just delivers a master, maybe post it one or max two times on FB and Twitter and then jump to the next releases on ten different labels. Guys, that´s bollocks. If you don´t believe in your music and don´t even feel obliged to push it as hard as you can why should others do it for you? Do less and focus on quality. Work your music and don´t expect others to do your job. These times are long gone.
9. Final thoughts?
– Life is great and we´re happy and very excited to be back no matter how far this journey will take us this time or how long it will last. All the best to your readers and see you soon somewhere on the dancefloors of this still beautiful planet called earth ;)))
