Many albums have a story behind them, but none quite compare to this one. This is his first release since his Mercury EP, released at the end of 2012. Absolutely nothing in between. He explained that the reason behind this was a bout of depression and severe writer’s block after Mercury, which forced him to change the way that he was living his life. He went wanderlust, and travelled the world to get closer to nature. He wrote four albums, and trashed every one of them. He learnt that mostly the world is good, and that was the message that he wanted to send with this album, which is finally getting released nearly four years later. And that, he does.
Gemini’s sound has matured to say the least. His debut Blue EP was a unique spin on Dubstep, whereas his releases in between and especially Mercury dabbled in Electro House as well. Wanderlust may still be electronic, but it’s not in your face; it’s quite restrained instead. That’s where its strength lies. Gemini’s vocals now have the space to shine through, as does his production, which is much more polished than it was at the beginning of the decade. There are slower songs and faster songs, some lean towards an alternative pop style, some are melodic and others are more relaxed. No song goes as hard as his previous discography did, and that shows that he has well and truly shed his old skin (multiple times most likely), and transformed into something bigger, more carefree and in tune with himself. He’s no longer just a producer, now he’s a singer-songwriter, or an artist in the true sense of its meaning.
There are no genres per se in Wanderlust. Instead he’s started everything from scratch and made tunes that express the emotions that he went through as he tackled a difficult time in his life. This isn’t the kind of album where you single out songs, instead it’s something that needs to be listened through in full.
