As ravers, we know all too well about living a sort of double life. While many of us hang up our suit and ties to change into kandi and fluffies, 21 year-old Scion Sasaki hangs up his robes for a set of turn tables and headphones. See, Scion is destined to be the head priest of his families 800 year-old temple after his father passes away. By day, he is a budding monk hoping to carry on a 23-generation tradition. By night, he is a popular nightclub DJ.
Living such a double life is difficult for anyone, but more so for Scion. Most of us are subjected to Western culture. Technology reigns supreme in today’s western world. Japan however experiences an interesting dichotomy; they practice both western and eastern ideals. Much of Japan is highly steeped in tradition, and with that comes very different ideals from a more western society. Having been born in the states, Scion experienced first hand what our society is all about, and with that came our music.
After heading back to Japan, Scion began DJing at night when he wasn’t training to be a monk. Sometimes coming home at 3 in the morning, only to be getting up an hour later for prayer with his family. This lifestyle would be difficult, having to completely change who you are depending on the situation you are in. However, Scion is not alone in his endeavors or ideals. Japan is experiencing an interesting shift in culture, drifting towards a more western way of thinking. The entire Sasaki family is attempting to hold onto these traditions while still incorporating new ways of thinking. The question they are asking is, “what can we do to be a temple that people will want to be apart of?” Scion’s father answers this:
As a monk, I think it’s important to be aware of what is popular in our time. I think Scion couldlive in a time when it’s acceptable for the temple to become a DJ club. It can be a functioning communal space. That is something I hope for.
So, instead of separating the two ways of thinking, the Sasakis are attempting to find a common ground. It is evident that Scion is the spearhead of this effort, as his passion for both music and religion is not stopping him. A lesson should be taken away from all of this. Though there is a large transition currently taking place in our society, we still need to hang onto some of our roots. Remember, we can still be civil, respectful people while dancing the night away at a rave.
