Point Point – Filet Mignon Volume III

Parisian artist collective Point Point have just released the third instalment of Filet Mignon, their mixtape series. This one is particularly special because it is the first release on their new ‘Future label’ Record Record, and each of the 25 songs in the mixtape shows what Point Point and their label are all about. Each song is unique and creative, and maybe apart from San Holo you won’t have heard of many of the artists behind them. There are upbeat songs and downbeat songs, some are chilled and others are hard, some are emotional and others aren’t. The only similarity between the music across the mixtape is that they are all Experimental or Hybrid Trap (although some don’t have a genre at all), and as a result they all manage to fit together under Point Point’s sound and vision.

You’ll find a song from each of the members of Point Point (Aazar, Devoted To God, L’Homme Aux 4 Lettres and Nömak) in Filet Mignon Vol. III, and these lead the style of the compilation that they have curated. There is a lot of forward-thinking music (and even sections of songs) hidden in this mixtape, and it disproves the people complaining about the lack of creativity in EDM – there’s an immense amount of it, but you need to know where to find it. Filet Mignon is a good place to start. If Point Point choose to sign more artists to Record Record, this mixtape (and the previous instalments) show that it has the potential to become one of the most forward-thinking and unique labels in dance music – just like how the four artists are as Point Point. There aren’t any standout songs on the mixtape – in fact they’re all well and truly underground, but if you could only listen to four songs I would recommend Nömak – Schrödinger’s Cat, San Holo – BWU, Devoted To God – Treize Mille Cinq Cent and Kultur – Solivagant. Take yourself on a journey and listen to something a bit different with Filet Mignon Volume III.
