Shockone – In This Light EP

May 6, 2016 by Nick Grindrod

SOIL-500x500

Three years after releasing his debut EP Universus, ShockOne has only released a few remixes and a VIP – until now. He’s finally released a new EP, and even though it retains his signature sound it’s anything but Universus. City Lock is the first song (and main single), and all that you need to know about it if you haven’t heard it already (and you should) is that it’s a Bass House banger.

The rest of the EP hasn’t been heard before though apart from when he’s teased songs live. The title track is next, with Savoi on vocals in a feel-good Drumstep tune with a melody that will make you want to put it on replay for a very long time. It’s the kind of tune that the DJ drops that makes you feel utterly euphoric for the entirety of the tune.

This Is Good Dubstep is, well, good Dubstep and goes hard in an ear-shattering way. It’s reminiscent of the kind of Dubstep made by Barely Alive, Virtual Riot, Zomboy and the like in a somewhat sarcastic way. The title is the result of a long-running inside joke between ShockOne and collaborator Phetsta, where Phetsta would comment on many of ShockOne’s Facebook posts demanding that he makes and plays unreasonably hard Dubstep tunes, often insisting that it’s a much better genre than Drum and Bass.

The whole joke started back in early 2014 in response to a short video showing what would become the final song on the EP, Some Kinda Drug Warp, which just goes to show how long this EP has been in the making.

Some Kind Of Drug Warp is a Jump-Up/Neurofunk banger that won’t please mainstream crowds, but is sure to go down well with anyone who likes the subgenres of Drum and Bass. All in all In This Light was more than worth the three year wait after the album, and shows that ShockOne is just as much a master of the studio as he is the decks – although we knew that already. You can listen to City Lock and In This Light below, or download the EP via iTunes here.
