Skull N” Tones- Here Comes The Pain (Original Mix)

March 25, 2015 by Nick Pesavento

I certainly wasn’t sure what to expect with the background consisting of a voice repeating some phrase. I loved the sound though, eerie, and it developed the beginning of a deep throbbing bass sound that hit right at the core. The vocal samples that are sparsely used throughout the rest of the song compliment the title “Here Comes The Pain,” allowing for the music to be the focus. I worry that some trap songs focus too much on the hip hop lyrics and lose sight of the music eliciting emotion from us. Skull N” Tones never lose sight of that defining characteristic of music as the trap elements are out in full force, the bass thuds and the higher pitched melodies immediately embed a need to move and shake everything you were given.

The song changes direction right in the middle, slowing down considerably and including much louder and brighter synths that I would normally say belong in a more house focused song. That background vocal is present and keeps the listener engaged with the familiar so as not to lose them with the change of sound. I quite enjoyed the rise the song takes nearer to the end, it builds well and gets your heart beating rapidly, waiting for that drop so you can just go nuts and lose yourself in the moment. Though I’m not normally a big trap fan, Skull N” Tones have layered sounds and used a complete change in sound to keep listeners engaged and dancing throughout the entire 6 minutes they have your attention. This is definitely not a tune to sleep on, so turn it up loud and don’t forget to dance with everything you’ve got.
