Spotify Deconstructs EDM and Explains How It Changed The World

August 22, 2016 by Grant Austin

Spotify is branching out of the music streaming scene and into the original series scene. They are producing 12 originals that will appear. One of them is “Deconstructed” where they will take different parts of the music industry and show their history in a basic form. The first episode, they decided to feature on Electronic Dance Music. This video is quite informative. Although, for a video, it seemed more like a glorified infographic at best. This video hits on the Detroit scene, the LGBT scene, all about PLUR and how it started, as well as other parts of the quote unquote, genre. It is very interesting, but like I said, it’s more or less a glorified infographic. Here’s the official description and the video.

EDM has grown into one of the music world’s biggest genres, topping the charts and headlining festivals across the globe. But it’s rooted in humble beginnings, first emerging out of the clubs of Detroit in the late 70’s.  Three teenagers conjured a futuristic sound of hope in response to the bleak surroundings of an economy that was crumbling around them.  Having become a magnet for misfits and outcasts looking to escape the doldrums of their everyday lives, the scene faced strong headwinds by the 90’s: corrupt promoters, hard drugs… and conservative politicians looking to shut it all down.  But a new crop of artists in Brooklyn brought positivity to the scene and helped usher it into its modern heyday.
