Steve James – Warrior (feat. LIGHTS)

January 27, 2017 by Grant Austin

Steve James is one of my favorite producers in the game right now and he’s only 18 years old. Don’t let the age full you because he’s not only a Grammy nominee for working on Justin Bieber’s Purpose LP, but each track that he has been putting out is absolutely fire. This is a track that seems to really resonate well especially with everything happening in politics and the marches as of lately. “I’m not stopping for you. I’m a fucking warrior.” It is wild to think of the experience that both Steve James has and LIGHTs who provided the vocals and lyrics has and their backgrounds. To combine their experiences, you have this anthem for anyone standing up for a cause. Steve James had this to say to VICE about the track:

I’m as much for equality as anybody. That might be [in terms of] race, that might be special needs, and gender as well. I think it’s really cool to have someone like LIGHTS write this song, but I connect with it because it’s a fight song. And she belts it—she sounds fierce. It’s like, ‘I’m a  fucking warrior.’ I think no matter who you are, this song is like, ‘I’m not going to take this. I’m going to fucking do it.’ But it’s great that she’s the one delivering the message.

LIGHTS had this to say in regards to this track being an anthem for women:

Hell yeah. Especially after the Women’s March, I’m so proud of what women have [accomplished] and will accomplish. [The song] can work for anybody, but I’m obviously coming from a woman’s perspective. I’m a mother in the industry; I still feel like a kid all the time. Any little thing that makes you feel stronger—[when you’re] trying to face the world and trying to make the right decision—is helpful.

Check out this warrior’s anthem!
