A few nights ago I was out with friends, and as the night was coming to an end and the DJ finished playing, a couple of drunk guys started yelling a song that everyone soon joined in on:
Heeeeeey, heeeey baby, ooh, aah
I wanna knoooow, if you’ll be my girl
That wasn’t the first time that that happened, which led me to wonder, why is Hey Baby so timeless? Well, as fast paced as it is danceable, the true genius of Hey Baby is the vocal hook of the chorus that has had everyone singing it with all their heart many times since its 2000 release. Originally a cover of a 1961 song by Bruce Channel, Hey Baby went on to become the adopted theme song of the 2002 FIFA world cup and hit number 1 basically everywhere as a result. There’s nothing like the satisfaction of belting this one out after a good night out with some friends, and its unique status as that song makes it an all time dance classic.
