When a song gets so big and so well-known that it no longer becomes classified as an electronic music hit but a worldwide pop hit instead, that’s when you know you’ve got one of the major classics. What Is Love falls into that category – even though it was released in 1992 and is an almost entirely electronic production, however got so famous from its classic line:
“What is love? Baby don’t hurt me, don’t hurt me, no more”
Its dance beat did help too though, propelling it to the top 10 in the US dance charts and number 1 in the vast majority of countries with charts, with the exceptions of the USA and Australia where it topped at numbers 11 and 12 respectively. In the late 2000’s it reached a point where everyone started to remix and cover it, and since that point famous artists like Gossip, Eminem and Kiesza all using it in their own creations.
