Why on Earth am I covering two songs in the same article? Well, it’s because both songs are essentially the same. They sound the same, they have similar names, and they both sample the same song (Waiting For A Star To Fall, by Boy Meets Girl). To be honest, they are basically both the same song. So how did this happen?
Australian duo Cabin Crew originally made the remix and named it Star2Fall, however Sony refused to allow the song to be released due to the sample. Instead, they asked British duo Sunset Strippers to remix the song and released that. However, the original singer from Boy Meets Girl re-recorded the vocals for Cabin Crew, who promptly released their version at the same time as Sunset Strippers.
Cabin Crew’s version ended up debuting higher on the charts, however Sunset Strippers’ version became more successful in the UK for a longer period of time. And there we have it: the result of a sampling battle born out of a mega-label’s desire to make a potential mega-hit their own. Which one was better? Does it matter? You decide. Let us know after you’ve listened to them both below.
